The Ghost of the Machine

MEDIUM

Acrylics

DIMENSIONS

15 × 20.5 inches

I once read a quote that stated “the soul is the ghost of a machine”. Inspired by this thought-provoking concept, this piece explores my interpretation of it. Our body functions following a methodical process, with physical proof of its every part. However, the soul is a concept we only believe to exist, without any evidence of it. It is thus the one part of such a concrete entity that remains unknown, acting as the ‘ghost’ of our ‘mechanical’ body. Here, the body is represented with an abstract machinery print, inspired by artist Frantisek Kupka’s technique. The layer placed underneath represents the soul, showing through the ‘machine’ in ghostly, wispy cut-outs.
