ANALYZING INSPIRATION SOURCES
1
Reebok × Pyer Moss Sneakers : Structured, Chunky, Bold, Layered

2
Bild Pelvic Bone : Branching Symmetry, Hollow, Negative Space, Organic

3
Cone Chair by Verner Panton : Minimalistic, Stacked Shapes, Transforming, Truncating

IDEATING
Translating the key qualities noted above into three speaker concept designs for each inspiration source.
1

Driving design factors:

1) Use form intelligently to give the sound-delivered direction, making it crisper and amplified.

I aimed to achieve this through concave and notched speaker planes, or speaker faces 'shielded' by guiding 'walls' to prevent the sound from dissipating uncontrolled.

2) Make the user experience playful and interactive.

I aimed to achieve this with sliding, joining, and disjoining parts.

IDEA DEVELOPMENT + PROTOTYPING
The technical feasibility, portability, and aesthetic choices of each design were re-examined and developed.
I prototyped each design to better evaluate their physical forms in dimensional space, and how a user may handle/experience each.

These three forms were taken forward as the final arc for each inspiration source. I believed they best achieved my goals of directional, amplified sound while maintaining a clean and interactive design.
BRANDING CONCEPT
A brand logo, product names, typefaces, and a color palette were chosen. The words 'bold' and 'classy' guided the brand aesthetic.

IDEA REFINEMENT
Product details such as materials, colors, proportions, buttons, ports, mechanical systems, branding, and aesthetic styling were refined to produce a marker render and orthographic drawing of each design.
carries the structured geometry and layered quality of the Reebok Sneakers.

The three triangular faces can be lifted and locked into position to activate and reveal the faceted speaker faces. They guide and amplify the sound in three directions.

The speaker can sit on it's base or side planes (demonstrated in in the model below).

Anvil
carries the organic form, changing relief, and hollowed spaces of the bird pelvic bone.

Two concave speaker faces direct and amplify the sound in two directions.

MORPH
carries the minimalistic form and transforming quality of Verner Panton's Cone Chair.
The three concave speaker faces guide and amplfy the sound in three directions.
These three directions are determined by the user's interactive positioning of the faces that fold on hinges to transform the speaker into a multitude of shapes.

FINAL MODEL
A final physical model for one of my three designs: Sn(p)eak.
